As a business we recognise we have a responsibility to care for the environment well beyond the legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and are continually improving our environmental performance, to engage with our local environment and to be welcoming to all. This is an ongoing process, with constant updates.
Innovation
In early 2020, we pioneered an exciting new initiative to
introduce a 95% plastic-free solution for our bath, body and
haircare products, introducing an innovative collection of D. R.
Harris toiletries & reducing our current consumption of 32,000
single-use plastic bottles of shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner
and body lotion per year to zero.
Tapping into the latest generation of effective bar formulations,
the hotel's new range by D. R. Harris comprises a
ground-breaking solid 45g shampoo bar and a solid 45g body wash
bar, as well as a body cream and a hair conditioner in fully
recycled and recyclable aluminium tubes, and a 70g soap, all
lightly scented with rose geranium. These practically-packaged, top
quality products are air-travel friendly, last longer due to their
concentrated formulations, reduce water wastage and eliminate
plastic packaging, whilst giving guests a pleasurable bath time
experience and a memento to take home.
Reduce single-use plastics
Following an extensive audit, we are in the process of
minimising the use of all single-use plastics throughout the hotel,
including packaging materials from suppliers.
So far, plastic straws, cotton buds, sewing kits, stirrers, plastic
toothpicks, measuring cups, takeaway coffee cups, cling film and
food containers have been replaced by sustainable
alternatives.
A major initiative was replacing all the guest bathroom amenities
supplied in plastic bottles with plastic-free alternatives.
Reduce waste
We aim to reduce waste throughout all the operations, whether
food or operational items, or energy & water.
LED lights have been retrofitted throughout - according to the
Carbon Trust, the resultant annual reduction in CO2, Sulphur
Dioxide & Nitrogen Oxide emissions is the equivalent of
planting 177.48 acres of forest and removing 124.81 cars from the
road.
Our hot water is generated by two CHP's, a technology recognised
worldwide as a cleaner alternative, reducing CO2 emissions.
Solar film has been placed on all windows, reducing energy
consumption.
Food sourcing
We vary menus according to season.
We serve vegetarian and vegan dishes to encourage meatless
meals.
We keep food waste to a mininum and compost where possible.
We are in the process of reviewing all food sourcing to ensure we
do so responsibly, taking into account human welfare, animal
welfare, deforestation, eco-systems, climate change, business
ethics, health & safety and the broader environment.
The bee hives on our roof produce enough honey to serve to guests
at breakfast throughout the year.
Recycling
All waste is separated and recycled by specialists in their
field, with nothing going to landfill. All food waste is
composted.
We work with Clean Conscience, a UK charity that
works to ensure the maximum amount of partially used hotel soap and
toiletries are recovered, re-purposed and redistributed. Half-used
liquid toiletries are decanted and repackaged in large volume
containers, for corporate charity donation; full or almost full
bottles are sanitised & placed into CareKit™ toiletry packs,
given to women's refuges; empty plastic bottles and tubes are sent
to an Energy from Waste facility; soap bars are sorted, cleaned,
chipped and re-processed into soap powder and soap noodles, which
are sent to the Kori Women's Development Project in Sierra
Leone.
House car
Our elegant chauffeur-driven house car - a hybrid BMW 7 Series iPerformance - is available on a complimentary basis for the use of hotel guests for all-electric, locally emission-free drop-offs in Mayfair.
Awards
We have been recognised by Green Tourism with a Silver Award and by Preferred Hotels & Resorts with a Certificate of Excellence in its annual GIFTTS Awards (Great Initiatives for Today's and Tomorrow's Society) for our sustainability efforts.
